iPhone Photo Format Settings Guide

March 2026 · 5 min read

Your iPhone shoots photos in HEIC format by default. While HEIC has many advantages, if you frequently share photos with non-Apple users or use software that does not support HEIC, you may want to switch formats. Here is how.

How to Switch iPhone Camera Format

iPhone offers two camera format options:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Choose High Efficiency (HEIC) or Most Compatible (JPEG)

Tip: Even with "High Efficiency" (HEIC) selected, iOS automatically converts HEIC to JPEG when sharing via AirDrop to Mac or sending via iMessage. However, email attachments and third-party apps do not auto-convert.

Transfer Settings: Automatic Conversion

iPhone also has a "Transfer to Mac or PC" setting that can automatically convert formats during transfer:

  1. Open Settings > Photos
  2. Find the Transfer to Mac or PC section
  3. Choose Automatic (auto-converts to JPEG) or Keep Originals (keeps HEIC)

ProRAW and ProRes

iPhone Pro models offer additional advanced format options:

These formats are designed for professional photographers and videographers; most users do not need them.

iCloud Photos and Formats

If you use iCloud Photos, keep in mind:

Recommended Configurations

Option 1: High Efficiency + Automatic Transfer

Set camera format to "High Efficiency" and transfer setting to "Automatic." You enjoy HEIC's smaller files on your phone, and photos auto-convert to JPEG when transferred to your computer — the best of both worlds.

Option 2: Most Compatible

Shoot directly in JPEG. Ideal for users who frequently use photos across different platforms, eliminating all conversion hassles.

Option 3: High Efficiency + Tool Conversion

Shoot in HEIC to save space, and batch-convert to JPG using an online tool when needed.

Conclusion

There is no single "best" setting — only the best setting for your usage habits. If you primarily use photos within the Apple ecosystem, HEIC is the better choice. If you frequently share across platforms, JPEG or the automatic conversion approach is more practical.
