Select a clip up to 30 seconds, add fades, and export M4R directly. Adding the custom ringtone to iOS still follows Apple's supported Files or GarageBand workflow.
The exported MP3 uses the LAME encoder at a constant bitrate of 192kbps, which is widely considered the optimal balance between audio quality and file size. If you need lossless quality, choose to export as WAV format.
